What are Acrostic Crosswords?
Acrostic Crosswords are a fun variation on our standard criss cross style crossword where by placing words in the grid you reveal a secret or hidden word.
What types of Criss Cross Style Acrostic Crosswords can I create?
Standard
A standard puzzle is one where the rows are stacked on top of each other (like the picture) and underneath are a set of clues to each word to help you fill in the grid and uncover the mystery word.
Word Fill
The word fill variant has the same grid as the standard puzzle however each row and each clue is no longer numbered so as part of the challenge you need to decipher what word fits where in the grid to uncover the mystery word.
Rather than having clues in this format you can also just utilise the word as the clue with the only challenge being where each word fits.
Word Scramble
The word scramble variant again has the same grid as the standard puzzle where the rows are stacked on top of each other. The difference here is that the clues (or words) are scrambled and need to be deciphered as part of the puzzle. This variation can also be run as the same time as the 'word fill' variation allowing you to add an extra element of challenge to your puzzles.

The Acrostic Crossword Generator supports 3 file types for the input.
XLSX (Excel files) and ODS files (OpenDocument Spreadsheet)
These files can be opened/created/edited in software such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Numbers and online tools such as Google Sheets.
You can use the template provided in the software or simply create a new file and place the titles, Question, Answer, Title and Mystery Word at the top of the sheet before filing in your questions, titles and mystery words. Questions are optional if you are creating a word place or word scramble puzzle as in this puzzle type typically the answers are also the question.
TXT (Text files)
These files can be opened/created/edited in any text editor such as Notepad, TextEdit and online tools such as Google Documents
You can use the template provided in the software or simply create a new file and place your title on the first line with a # before it, the mystery word on the line beneath starting with a * and then a list of your questions and answers separated by the pipe symbol. Questions are optional if you are creating a word place or word scramble puzzle (simple exclude the question and pipe symbol) as in this puzzle type typically the answers are also the question.
A ton of customisation options...
You can control the layout having the clues/words underneath the puzzle (as above), or perhaps generate them to the side of the puzzle to have multiple puzzles per page...
Or maybe generate them separately (great for large print)...
And of course complete control over fonts, sizing, colours etc...
A ton of export options....
Not only can you export into PNG, JPG and SVG (vector format) you can also export as a PDF file controlling things such as trim size, spacing, margins and puzzles/solutions per page to create a file that is READY TO UPLOAD!
And don't forget the generous licensing...
You have full commercial rights to the content you create using this software. There are NO limitations set by us to how you can use the content you create as long as it’s legal.
